Craig Saper contemplates the paradox that an artist of her stature could remain virtually unknown while subverting mainstream art and culture so relentlessly and so humorously for so long. Anne Thurmann-Jajes relates the value of the Banana Rag and other publications in publicizing the artist's actions and maintaining contact with other artists. And Edward M. Dion uses the techniques of social realism to discuss First Nations class struggles in modern Saskatchewan life. Dion’s Red Worker series is comprised of several monumental portraits depicting Aboriginal people in the workforce. These larger-than-life portraits are composed of multiple panels, a technique that draws attention to society’s imposition of grid-like systems or categorizations, such as the pattern of land colonization.

It is from this series that Dion’s labour intensive sculptural constructions evolved. Recycling first world waste, he has created Starblankets and Shields out of computer circuitry boards using patterns that call to mind traditional quilts and blankets. In particular, the iconic star patterns that appear reference plains First Nations designs. Playing with our concept of time and tradition, they stimulate discussion of how traditions are valued and interpreted within modern society. In their use of material and symbolism they allude to systems of connections and communication. The modern circuitry offers an updated symbol of longstanding social networks, while at the same time talking about empowerment through technology within First Nations communities.

Dion’s Shield Wall is constructed with the same circuitry boards as his Starblankets, but with an added layer of plexiglass similar to that used for riot shields. Dion’s Shield Wall, however, is not meant to threaten the viewer but to symbolize a mobile force that calls upon and can encircle kin in a protective manner while resisting the mob of ignorance and intolerance. Henderson is one of the central figures in the first generation of professionally trained artists who came to live in Saskatchewan around the turn of the last century. Born in Glasgow, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art and worked in London as a commercial artist. In 1910 he came to Canada, first to Regina and then to Fort Qu'Appelle where he spent the rest of his life. Henderson was fascinated by the landscape of the Qu-Appelle Valley and the Indigenous peoples of the Canadian West and was one of the few artists in Western Canada to make his living solely through his art. The University of Saskatchewan commissioned him to paint a series of portraits of individuals from the Western Tribes in Alberta and Saskatchewan. These portraits, along with his landscape paintings - especially those of the Qu'Appelle Valley, which are enduring poetic reveries of passing seasons and times of day - were exhibited nationally and internationally, assuring him a prominence few artists could match during his time.

Published by the Mendel Art Gallery, 2010. 224 Pages. Its marks beginnings and endings, a line between yours and mine, between in and out. Borders attempt to define and delineate, striving to create order and to make sense of tangible and theoretical ways of being in the world. Borders are permeable and unfixed yet they are formidable. This exhibition examines the metaphysical, geopolitical and geographical separations between realms to reveal the sites where they meet, diverge and blur.

borderLINE seeks to probe the ways borders are defined, who has the power to enforce them, and who (or what) is confined by their limits. The works in this exhibition consider how we live with the land and with each other, exposing privilege, reciprocity and erasures. Therefore, it can, also, become important to me. Nothing is of no importance, everything can be important, everything can become important. I want to define the act of sharing—a work, a skill, a thought, an experience—as an act of competence. We/I will share what I/we am/are competent for. We/I must ourselves/myself decide what I am competent of. To be competent means to take responsibility. I want to create the conditions in which to share our competences, all kind of competences we own, as human beings. “What can I learn from you. What can you learn from me.” reflects the ambition and the attempt to create a universal work of art."
— Thomas Hirschhorn

Field Guide Exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue, designed by karlssonwilker, featuring essays by the exhibition curators, Gregory Burke and Sandra Guimarães, and writings by Tanya Lukin Linklater and Duane Linklater, Ryan Gander, and Thomas Hirschhorn.

Also accompanying the exhibition is the artist’s book, Picasso and I, by Ryan Gander, featuring his 406 drawings inspired by all Picasso linocuts in the Remai Modern collection.

Adrian Stimson: Maanipokaa’iini is published in association with the first-ever survey of the work of the Siksika Nation artist Adrian Stimson, on view at Remai Modern from April 2 to September 5, 2022. This book provides critical insight into the artist’s methodological approach across a diverse range of media. Tarah Hogue’s curatorial essay considers the grounding of Stimson’s practice in the energetic lifeworld of the Siksikaitsitapi from his early paintings to the new work created for the exhibition. Adrian Stimson and Dr. Ernie Walker’s dynamic conversation explores their shared affinity for bison at the intersection of art and science. Erin Sutherland’s essay traces Stimson’s methodology of “start with a tickle, give a slap, then finish with a hug” across multiple performances. Tess Allas and Joseph Pugliese’s text speaks to Stimson’s powerful visual and material testimony on the impacts of the residential school system. Designed by Sébastien Aubin and with a welcome from Wanuskewin Elder Mary Lee, the publication reflects Stimson’s commitment to the transformational capacities of Indigenous knowledge and artistic practice.

Adrian Stimson (b. 1964) is a member of the Siksika (Blackfoot) Nation in southern Alberta. Stimson has exhibited widely across Canada and internationally. He has a BFA with distinction from the Alberta College of Art and Design and an MFA from the University of Saskatchewan.
