Description

Gary Arcand bio: I was born on June 26, 1965, and raised in Moosomin First Nation, where I grew up immersed in the Cree language, culture, and traditional way of life, learning from Elders the importance of respect, prayer, ceremony, and lifelong learning. These teachings inspired my lifelong commitment to preserving First Nation knowledge and supporting healing within First Nations communities. I have been entrusted with sacred teachings, including responsibilities associated with the Sacred Pipe and the Four Directions, and I continue to serve as a knowledge keeper and lifelong learner with humility and respect. Throughout my life, I have helped organize cultural and healing camps, facilitated programs promoting wellness and cultural revitalization, and served for more than twenty years as a Master of Ceremonies for weddings, funerals, conferences, and community gatherings across Saskatchewan. Professionally, I have served First Nations through the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations (FSIN) in leadership, policy, communications, and advisory roles, working closely with Chiefs, governments, and Indigenous organizations. My work has taken me to all seventy-four First Nations in Saskatchewan, where my fluency in Cree has allowed me to learn directly from Elders and strengthen my belief that lasting solutions must be community-driven, culturally grounded, and rooted in Indigenous knowledge. In 1993, I founded the Indigenous Times newspaper, serving as publisher and editor for more than two decades while advocating for First Nations through journalism and public education. After more than five years of research and writing, I completed my first book in 2026 to preserve Cree stories, teachings, spirituality, ceremonies, and history for future generations. I currently live in Saskatoon and remain committed to preserving Indigenous languages, strengthening communities, and inspiring young people through education, cultural teachings, and future projects, including an animated film based on my book. My life’s work has been guided by faith, determination, and service, and I hope my legacy will help ensure that our languages, ceremonies, teachings, and identities continue to thrive for generations to come.
