Remai Modern is excited to participate in a programming initiative that celebrates Queer expressive forms and brings together communities in the spirit of collaboration and creative exchange. Participants are invited to register to take part in a series of workshops focused on techniques and categories of ballroom events.
Workshop Details:
No dance background or past experience is necessary. Capacity for the workshops is limited to 50 with registration on a first-come first-served basis. We are collecting a registration fee and can accommodate those facing financial barriers to participation.
Saskatoon Workshops - Tuesday, December 16
Location: Remai Modern, Riverview Room
Regina Workshops- Wednesday, December 17
Location: Q Nightclub, 2070 Broad Street

Workshop #1: “Ballroom DJ-ing 101” (90min)

Join Canadian Overseer Legendary Charmed Mulan for a look into the rich history of Ballroom, how they found their way into the scene, and a discussion on the essentials of DJing in Ballroom.
Discover how sound, rhythm, and energy come together to move the crowd and bring the categories to life. Beginner level, open to all.

Workshop #2: “Best Dressed 101” (90min)

Explore the history of Ballroom fashion and learn what makes a look turn heads.
Explore each category — Male Figure, Female Figure, and GNC Best Dressed — and what defines them. Beginner level, open to all.
Instructor Bio: LEGENDARY CANADIAN OVERSEER DJ BLACKCATT (CHARMED MULAN)
This funky dread has opened for Dancehall Queen Spice, City Girls, Saucy Santana, Canadian R&B Superstar & friend Jully Black & hard hitting superstar DJs like the late ICON DJ Vjuan Allure & DJ Mikeq. He has DJed for festivals like Blockorama (TOR) , UK Black Pride (UK), Halifax Pride (CAN) & DC Black Pride. He also works closely with the Ballroom community & is a The Canadian Overseer & Legendary member of the Kiiki Haus of Mulan Canadian Chapter & the mainstream House Of Monroe. The 1st Canadian house in Canada. The Toronto Kiki Ballroom Alliance (TKBA) & Van Vogue Jam in Vancouver. He also works with Pride Toronto as a Program Curator & consultant for the last 5 years.
Voted Ballroom DJ of the Year (3X), Best Dressed Of The year & Church Street's favorite DJ & recipient of the Inspire Awards “Lifetime Achievement Award” for his contributions the Black LGBTQ community & bringing the popular urban sound to Toronto`s LGBTQ club scene, this Black Catt never sleeps and neither will you if you're at one of his functions & dare to cross his path.
