Description

This perpetual desk calendar can be used year after year. It features a Cree word for every day of the year. The words are grouped into themes, Words are written according to a Cree dictionary and then pronunciations are written out in an easy-to-understand phonetic form. Measures approximately 5.5 x 5".

This Calendar was created by Liz and Les Hurlburt. It was originally developed for family members. However, there had been such a wide demand for the calendar that a revised edition was designed for the public. Liz (nee Kimbley) is a Cree/Metis from Beauval, Saskatchewan. During her career, Liz was a teacher, health educator, and Cree language instructor at St. Mary’s School, North Battleford, SK. Les met Liz in Beauval and were married in the chapel of the Beauval Indian Residential School. Les was a teacher and mental health professional. He learned Cree from Liz and his mother-in-law Marguerite Kimbley. Liz’s parents attended the Beauval Indian Residential School as did Liz as a day scholar.

This calendar aims to promote a spirit of reconciliation and understanding. The makers realize how important it is to preserve the Cree language. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action Article 14 recognized that “there is an urgency to preserve Aboriginal languages.” Therefore, they hope that this calendar will spark an increased interest in the Cree language and thus lead to more understanding, interactions, and strategies that will help promote and maintain the Cree Language.
