Description

Celebrate Saskatoon's Landmarks with Remai Modern's new collection postcards. Printed in Saskatoon. 5"x7" Postcard featuring the work: Saskatoon by Eva Mendel Miller (Canadian, 1919 - 2019)1940. oil on paper board. The Mendel Art Gallery Collection at Remai Modern. Purchased 1989.

As a young woman, Eva Mendel studied art in several European cities and she continued her studies in New York and Montreal before settling with her parents in Saskatoon. Here, she became actively involved with the Saskatoon Art Association and Saskatoon Art Centre, precursors to the Mendel Art Gallery. As she pursued her art practice, she attended Ernest Lindner’s Saturday evening art discussions and organized visits to her father’s art collection.

Saskatoon was painted soon after Eva came to the city. It depicts a view from the Bessborough Hotel, where the Mendel family lived when they arrived. This painting has a European quality of light and demonstrates Eva’s interest in German Expressionism. She has had numerous exhibitions, notably in Saskatoon and Montreal, and established an impressive collection of artwork with her late husband, Dr. Max Miller, from their extensive travels. Eva Mendel Miller was the Honourary Chair of the Mendel Art Gallery, an institution she generously supported for many years.
